| 201 | 2 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 14:00 - 15:30 | Vivaldi, Ana | Public NotesThis course introduces students to an advanced understanding of, and engagement with, the interactions between law and social movements. The first part traces class struggles and focuses on the cycles of crisis generated by Indigenous and Black, queer and transfeminist, decolonial, and environmental movements. We will examine how mobilized civil society has served as a central force in advancing legal frameworks that move beyond the false universality of Western, patriarchal, white supremacist law. We will also explore key theories that explain and inform these transformations. This part includes too an overview of some of the most significant transnational and intersectional socio-legal transformations brought about by social movements, offering the opportunity for detailed examination from a global perspective. The second part involves a guided research project on a topic of the student’s choice, with a focus on reproductive justice. |

| A_101 | 1 | In-Person | Seminar | W | 12:00 - 15:00 | Patterson, Christopher | Public NotesGRSJ_V 500A-101 is the first of a two-term seminar course organized in conjunction with the Noted Speaker Lecture Series hosted by the Institute. Students will develop professional skills for critical scholarship and social justice praxis by learning from a colloquium of voices (the instructor, the speakers, GRSJ faculty, and each other). The seminar will be a vibrant space for exchange and will foster critical and creative dialogues on current questions, theoretical and methodological approaches, and interventions around social justice. The course’s focus on dialogue and critical/creative responses will aim to interrogate questions of ethics, power, and political practice, and to provide critical foundations for examining how to approach knowledge production in academic contexts. Students must complete GRSJ_V 500A-101 before enrolling in GRSJ_V 500B-201. Registration in GRSJ_V 500B-201 will not be permitted without successful completion of the prerequisite. Enrolment in GRSJ-V 500B will prioritize GRSJ graduate students, with up to 5 spots available to non-GRSJ graduate students. Non-GRSJ graduate students who are interested in enrolling should send your request to grsj.programsassistant@ubc.ca and include the course number, section, and your student number. The class will be held in Buchanan Tower 1099. |

| 201 | 2 | In-Person | Seminar | T | 14:00 - 17:00 | Pierre, Jemima | Public NotesThis seminar is centrally concerned with the ethics and politics of knowledge production in a world structured through gendered white supremacist, imperialist, and capitalist power. How do we trace the intimacies of the relationships among places, peoples, ecologies, and economies of the modern world? How do we engage in historical recognition and bear witness to this history of violence and dispossession – but also of transformative forms of resistance? How do we reconcile the colonial production of economies, states, and cultures with the ongoing “postcolonial” othering and dispossession of people? What are ethical modes of intellectual inquiry? As a course on methods, our objectives are: 1) to explore the ways that methods are informed by epistemologies which are, in turn, shaped by history, politics, and ethics; 2) to understand how radical scholars have come to devise their research questions and modes of analysis, and why these are important not only for humanistic and scientific inquiry, but also for liberation. This course is restricted to GRSJ MA and PhD students, however there are 5 available seats for non-GRSJ students. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please send your request to grsj.programsassistant@ubc.ca and include the course number, section, and your student number. Once our GRSJ students register, we will begin to move students from the waitlist to the course in order of waitlisted registration. The class will be held in Buchanan Tower 1099. |
