Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

Eligibility: PhD students
Value: $50,000 a year for up to two years
General Deadline: September
A prestigious scholarship awarded to 60 individuals across Canada each year. Students can apply through ResearchNet (link is external).

Canada Graduate Scholarships
CGS-M & CGS-D

Eligibility: Canadian citizens and permanent residents
Value: $17,500 for a Master’s student and $20,000 for a PhD student
General Deadline: September for PhD students, December for MA students (departmental competition).
SSHRC and CIHR is the federal agency for funding research. The main competition is open to domestic (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) applicants only.

Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

Eligibility: PhD students
Value: $60,000 annual stipend for a maximum of two years
General Deadline: September/October
The number of new awards offered each year presently varies between three and five.

Affiliated Fellowships

Eligibility: All graduate students
Value: Fellowship values range from $175 to $30,000, but most are in the range of $16,000
General Deadline: September for PhD, December for MA (departmental competition)
These are a collection of awards held by UBC which are supported by private donors. Anyone who applies for a SSHRC award is automatically considered for an Affiliated award.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship Program

Eligibility: Canadian citizens, permanent residents, international PhD students
Value: Up to $40,000 stipend plus up to $20,000 research and travel allowance per year for three years
General Deadline: December for PhD students

Indigenous Graduate Fellowship

Eligibility: All Indigenous students are eligible to apply, but priority is given to Indigenous students whose traditional territory falls, at least in part, within Canada. This includes Canadian First Nations, Métis or Inuit students and may include Indigenous students from Alaska and other states of the USA.
General Deadline: January/February
Each fellowship provides a stipend of $18,200 per year for doctoral students or a stipend of $16,175 per year for Master’s students. Additionally, IGF recipients are eligible to receive tuition funding.

Indigenous Graduate Fellowship 5th Year Award

Eligibility: All Indigenous students are eligible to apply, but priority is given to Indigenous students whose traditional territory falls, at least in part, within Canada. This includes Canadian First Nations, Métis or Inuit students and may include Indigenous students from Alaska and other states of the USA.
General Deadline: January/February
The IGF 5th Year Award provides a stipend of $18,200 per annum plus tuition to support Indigenous Doctoral students’ fifth year of study. Tuition funding will not exceed the current value of standard doctoral degree tuition fees.

Four Year Fellowships (4YF)

Eligibility: PhD students
General Deadline: February/March
The department offers a small number of Four Year Fellowships (4YF) to outstanding doctoral students worth $18,200 per year with tuition coverage. Preference is given to incoming students.

Department Awards

Eligibility: All graduate students
General Deadline: February/March
Each year the department gives out up to $2,000 in graduate scholarships from our endowed funds. Calls for these awards are distributed via e-mail. To participate in the awards competition, students must complete an application form on the GRSJ Air Site and provide additional information including recent transcripts and following specifications in the call.
