Failing at Being Feminine

Dr. Kim Snowden was interviewed for a special cultural issue of UBC’s student newspaper, The Ubyssey, earlier this month.

The piece, Failing at Being Feminine looks at how media and gender norms influence femininity in our bodies. Dr. Snowden, who teaches GRSJ 401 (Gender, Body & Society) shared her thoughts on a variety of issues including the policing of women’s bodies and the news media’s tendency to comment on women’s appearance.

There’s a lot of interest in thinking about the policing of certain bodies … or who is more prone to forms of discrimination that focus on the body. It does seem that at the centre of that is gender, and particularly women’s bodies, or those who identify as women [are] dealing with this more.
