任敏 Ly Min Ren (they/them) is a trans-nonbinary queer researcher, poet, writer, translator and transdisciplinary artist and filmmaker working across Chinese and English. Currently, their research focuses on the potential of the position of rural Chinese femme, queer and trans* to threaten the violent matrix of liberal nationhood of People’s Republic of China.


Research

Intellectually, their methods are indebted to Black Feminist Radical Thought, psychoanalysis, and deconstructive philosophy, as well as informed by their training in Anthropology, with a minor in Cinema and Media Studies at University of Chicago (B.A. 2020).

任敏是一位非二元跨儿、酷儿学者、诗人、作者、译者、跨媒介艺术家、电影人。目前 ta 的学术研究关注的是中国农村女性、酷儿和跨儿所处位置对中国(PRC)的国家性暴力矩阵产生威胁的潜力。Ta 在智识上蒙恩黑人女权激进思想传统,精神分析和解构哲学,并得益于ta 本科在芝加哥大学(2020届)主修人类学,辅修电影媒体研究的学术训练。


Additional Information

Ly’s art and writing practice is rooted in the explosive power of vulnerability and in witnessing and surviving violence. This currently takes the form of:

– a working collection of bilingual (Chinese, some English) poetry with annotated CH-EN translation and literary/character image analysis, experimentally communicating Chinese Character Thinking and visual poetics to Anglosphere readers;
– digital multi-media 3D installation, curation and place-making;
– a 小报童 column of personal essays, extending from
– a Weibo account where they have been writing both fragments and long-form since 2015, of 情感/Qing Gan/sentiment/affect/emotion, spirituality, healing, poetics, raciality, sexuality, and personal growth, creating space for/from/with trans-national, trans-disciplinary, trans-gender thinking, meditative, energetic and artistic practice based in intimate relating and resonance, where they experiment in release from the limits of theory.

They are privileged to share this digital space with 170K accounts in parasocial community on Weibo, and have collaborated with volunteer teams to run two Weibo public humanities projects about mental health (body image and complex PTSD) each with 15K accounts in community.

They are the writer, director, and producer of four narrative short films, including “Red Rose, White Rose” (2018), which has shown at NewFilmmakers New York, Aphrodite Film Awards, Institute for Provocation, and Taipei Contemporary Art Center, and they have been cinematographer on multiple short films. They were librettist for a contemporary opera workshop, “Azure’s hands” (2021), produced by Overtone Industries. They have shadowed head dramaturg Nora Titone at Court Theatre and programmed the series “Into the New Millenium: 1990s and Onward in China and Taiwan” at Doc Films. They have been playing the piano for 18 years, love writing and producing their own music, and is a beginner martial artist in Hansu Hapkido.

– 主要中文,辅以英语的诗集,正在写作,包括基于字思维的中译英加注,以多媒体形式实验性地向英语界读者传达中文诗歌的字象与语言艺术;

– 小报童专栏,散文、诗歌;
– 自从2015年开始的微博,从碎片到短篇散文创作皆有,关于情感、灵性、诗性、种族性、性/别与自我成长,创造空间进行跨领域、跨国界、跨性别的哲思、冥思、艺术和亲密关系与共振。情绪、能量和思想的细微深处,也是从理论所及的框架边界释放。
Ta 有幸与17万关注者账户共享数字空间,并与志愿者团队运营过两个精神健康相关的微博公众知识项目(@我的美丽身体 和 @复杂性创伤后应激账号),皆计有1.5万左右关注者社群。
