Minelle Mahtani appointed as Brenda and David McLean Chair in Canadian Studies



We are pleased to announce that Professor Minelle Mahtani has been appointed as the 2021-2023 Brenda and David McLean Chair in Canadian Studies in the Faculty of Arts.

Dr. Mahtani is an Associate Professor in the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice and is recognized internationally as a hybrid scholar-activist-journalist with a long record of accomplishments and distinctions not only as an academic but also as a professional journalist and public scholar in critical journalism. She is the author of Mixed Race Amnesia: Resisting the Romanticization of Multiraciality in Canada (UBC Press, 2014) and one of the editors of Global Mixed Race (NYU Press, 2014). Among her many service and leadership roles, Dr. Mahtani was President of the Association for Canadian Studies and has served at UBC as the inaugural Senior Advisor to the Provost on Racialized Faculty. She is the former award-winning radio host of the show “Sense of Place” and “Acknowledgements” on Roundhouse Radio, 98.3 Vancouver, and her publications have appeared in VICE, The Walrus, Carte Blanche and Maisonneuve.

Professor Mahtani will teach the senior seminar in Canadian Studies (CDST 450) each year and present a series of lectures based on her research in the spring of 2023. Please visit the Canadian Studies website https://canadianstudies.ubc.ca/ for details.
