| 101 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 11:00 - 12:30 | Machado, Isabel | Public NotesCSIS 200 is a survey intro course where students learn about the basic concepts related to sexuality studies and build a foundation in the discipline. Sexuality is often thought of as a natural and unchanging behaviour that has no history. In this course, however, we treat sexuality as socially constructed and historically dynamic. We study how the meaning and politics of sexuality have changed over time and look at the emergence of new categories of sexual identity while recognizing how sexuality relates to systems of power, emphasizing how sexuality intersects with race, gender, class, ability, religion, ethnicity, citizenship, nationality, health, education, and other markers of difference and belonging. |

| 101 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | M, W, F | 13:00 - 14:00 | Iskander, Lee | Public Notes“Trans studies” is a diverse and growing area of scholarship that takes as a starting point the knowledge and lived experiences of people who might describe themselves as trans, transgender, transsexual, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, or using other terms that refer to movement across or existence between gendered positions. This course will chart the development of trans studies as a field, consider its relationship to queer studies and feminist studies, evaluate key debates, and examine arguments about where the field ought to be headed in the future. We will explore how transness intersects with race, disability, sexuality, citizenship, and culture. Throughout the course, students will be invited to apply key insights from trans studies scholarship to texts from popular culture and their personal experiences with gender through written and creative assignments. Classes include a mix of lecture, small and large-group discussions, workshops, film screenings and guest speakers. |

| 227 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 09:30 - 11:00 | Snowden, Kim | Public NotesThis course provides an introduction to social justice scholarship, practice, and activism from the origins and histories of early feminist and equality movements to an intersectional, anti-racist and anti-colonial exploration of contemporary social justice. We will explore the ways that intersecting and hierarchical relations of power, privilege, and marginalization are reproduced and how they shape our social, political, and everyday lives. Students will engage critically with major issues, debates, and politics in social justice through theory and scholarship, media, new media, and activism. A particular focus for this Law and Society section will be an exploration of how social justice movements - and the backlash against them - engage with, challenge, and influence laws and policies in areas such as reproductive politics, disability justice, racial justice, violence against women and girls, climate justice, and queer and trans rights. This course is a part of the Coordinated Arts Program (CAP), Law and Society stream.
Students must register for both Term 1 and Term 2 courses in CAP.
Follow the prompts to register for all stream seminars (1), lectures (2), and tutorials (1-2) each term. For step-by-step instructions go to: https://cap.arts.ubc.ca/program/registration/

| 101 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | M, W | 12:30 - 14:00 | Machado, Isabel | Public NotesGRSJ 101 is an introduction to social justice studies that explores the ways in which intersecting and hierarchical relations of power, privilege, and marginalization are reproduced and how they shape social arrangements and everyday lives. This course provides an introductory study of theories, concepts, and strategies of social justice, including individual action, policy, advocacy, and collective action. Rather than assume a singular definition of social justice, it considers different perspectives and engages participants in discussion and critical analysis as we grapple with these perspectives and our own experiences. This course section does not offer a waitlist. We encourage you to monitor the registration system regularly and enroll should a seat become available. | ||

| 102 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 12:30 - 14:00 | Bandali, Alifa | Public NotesThis course introduces students to social justice. We begin with theoretical and activist frames such as intersectionality to explore social movements, allyship, decolonization, the media/media activism and everyday life. Drawing from feminist perspectives and histories, critical race theory and Indigenous perspectives (to name a few) – our aim is to open up and contribute to discourses surrounding power asymmetries. Importantly, we seek to build our anti-oppression toolkits to think critically about the world around us; to engage meaningfully in allyship and solidarity building; and to examine what it means to resist ‘things the way they are’. As this is a first-year course, we are interested in starting conversations and dialogue about broader systems of power, how they work and what they do, especially from our own investments and positionalities. This course section does not offer a waitlist. We encourage you to monitor the registration system regularly and enroll should a seat become available. | ||
| 99A | 1 | Online | Lecture | Mayer, Tara | Public NotesHow do gender, race, sexuality, class, disability, and colonialism shape our everyday lives? GRSJ 101 introduces students to the key concepts, debates, and questions at the heart of Social Justice studies. Through engaging online content, students explore how systems of power and inequality are produced, challenged, and transformed across diverse social and historical contexts. The course examines intersectionality, identity, representation, social movements, and struggles for justice, encouraging students to think critically about the world around them. Drawing on feminist, anti-racist, queer, trans, disability justice, and decolonial perspectives, GRSJ 101 equips students with analytical tools for understanding contemporary social issues and envisioning more equitable futures. Designed for students from all backgrounds and disciplines, this flexible online course fosters curiosity and critical reflection. | 101 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | M, W, F | 10:00 - 11:00 | Angeles, Leonora | Public NotesWhat does it mean to think about social justice issues from global perspectives? Why is thinking about social justice issues globally, or from transnational and translocal perspectives, and through feminist, decolonial, structural/systemic, intersectional lens so important, now more than ever? Drawing on feminist, political economy, critical development, anti-colonial and anti-racist perspectives from various disciplines, this course examines social justice issues at various scales – local, community (micro), institutional (meso) and global or international (macro). Global social justice issues linked to global economic and trading systems, food security, water security, sustainable livelihoods and housing affordability, poverty reduction, prostitution and human trafficking, militarism and gender-based violence, inclusive development, humanitarian aid, reproductive health, education -- are examined through the lens of history, feminist analysis, critical sexualities, critical race theories, class analysis, and indigenous /decolonizing/anti-colonial perspectives, placing global social in/justice issues at the centre of particular temporal, economic, political, cultural and geographic contexts. This is a foundational course to higher-level courses dealing with social justice issues, social movements and community organizing in the Global South. This course section does not offer a waitlist. | 201 | 2 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 09:30 - 11:00 | Catungal, John Paul | Public NotesHow are our experiences and understandings of the world shaped by histories, systems and processes of social differentiation? Focusing on the technological, infrastructural and discursive manifestations of these issues, we will think together about the making of inequalities and violence transnationally, as well as historical and ongoing practices of survival, activism, organizing and resistance towards more socially just and abundant global futures. This course offers an introduction to contemporary literary studies through examples of fiction, poetry, and theory from this field, with an emphasis on anti-colonial and anti-capitalist critique. Students can expect to do a fair amount of reading and in-class writing but need not have prior experience in a university-level literature course. Instead, we will work step by step throughout the term to build and practice the foundational skill of literary studies: the close reading of content and form. Alongside this practice, we will learn about the colonial roots of the scholarly discipline of English literature as well as the way that this history has been creatively contested by authors and critics who see literature as a way to re-imagine and re-shape our relationship to the world. The reading list is subject to change but may include Dionne Brand, Fady Joudah, Andreas Malm, and Eman Abdelhadi and M.E. O’Brien.

Together we will address the variety and complexities of themes, narratives and cultural issues that are constructed and represented in the genre of fairy tales and explore how fairy tales can understood and reimagined through a feminist, social justice lens. Readings will include a variety of traditional and contemporary fairy tales, fairy-tale retellings, and fairy tale media, film, and television and we will explore the use of fairy motifs in other popular culture. | A_101 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 11:00 - 12:30 | Puar, Jasbir | Public NotesDecolonizing Disability
This class brings together several literatures to explore connections between disability justice, prison abolition movements, and anti-imperialist transnational organizing. Understanding the relationships between carceral spaces, debility, and disability is needed more than ever in the face of the rise of authoritarian governments; engulfing forms of disaster capitalism and climate change; the swelling of refugee, migrant, and abandoned populations; unprecedented levels of mass incarceration, policing, counter terrorism surveillance, genocide, and permanent war. These contemporary forces create disability and debility while concomitantly impacting disabled people disproportionately. We will also look at the abolitionist decolonial ideologies, organizing, and forms of resistance to these interconnected technologies of immiseration that are envisioning and demanding futures free of carceral enclosure. Along with attention to subjectivity, subject formation, and identity readings develop analytics for systems and structures that span international scales--legal apparatuses, maiming as global governance, debt as spatial enclosure, the biopolitics of settler colonialism, racial capitalism, the commodification of violence--that critically form and impact relations of gender, sexuality, race, class, disability, and nationhood.

| B_201 | 2 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 12:30 - 14:00 | Bandali, Alifa | Public NotesOn Masculinities and Femininities: From Social Media to Everyday Life This course explores how masculinities and femininities are constructed and lived. We seek to examine the relational aspects of gender, the role of institutions and what this means in terms of thinking intersectionally about identity formation(s). We will consider the importance of everyday life, school, the media and especially online spaces that have catalyzed recent movements and phenomena such as the Trad Wives Movement, the Manosphere, Looksmaxxing and more. Our aim is to make visible how white supremacy, capitalism and patriarchy (to name a few) continue to operate and persist in daily life (which is also being resisted and challenged), and how masculinities and femininities are implicated.

| 901 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 15:30 - 17:00 | Bandali, Alifa | Public NotesThis course centers on the concept, framework and histories of intersectionality. We begin by tracing its roots/routes to Black women and Black lesbian women’s organizing in the United States. We seek to open up, and engage in conversations on why and how feminist, anti-racist, (dis)ability and critical theories make visible the invisible. Namely, how power operates to marginalize and oppress individuals, groups and communities. This course offers a curated overview on the impact and legacies of historical and contemporary politics of gender as a social justice issue. Using a range of avenues and readings from academic texts, the media and popular culture, everyday life and experience, we will engage in debates, discourse and curiosities that take seriously power/power asymmetries. Students will be encouraged to draw from their own lived experiences and interests to examine how they are reading the world around them critically (for example, in their everyday interactions, in institutions and more).

| 201 | 2 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 14:00 - 15:30 | Vivaldi, Ana | Public NotesThis course introduces students to an advanced understanding of, and engagement with, the interactions between law and social movements. The first part traces class struggles and focuses on the cycles of crisis generated by Indigenous and Black, queer and transfeminist, decolonial, and environmental movements. We will examine how mobilized civil society has served as a central force in advancing legal frameworks that move beyond the false universality of Western, patriarchal, white supremacist law. We will also explore key theories that explain and inform these transformations. This part includes too an overview of some of the most significant transnational and intersectional socio-legal transformations brought about by social movements, offering the opportunity for detailed examination from a global perspective. The second part involves a guided research project on a topic of the student’s choice, with a focus on reproductive justice. |

The course will first dispel the falsehoods about games and the stereotypes about people who play them, and direct toward understanding how games can spark rage, confusion, and the desire to isolate, as well as provide spaces to critically assess societal exploitations and inequalities, and can build community for queer, racialized, and neurodiverse players. We will also explore how games have been influential in political actions and social imagination. Students will be trained in the analytical skills of gameplay in writing essay responses to game texts, and in imagining their own games as a means of transforming the genres of gaming. |

| 201 | 2 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 15:30 - 17:00 | Angeles, Leonora | Public NotesHow and why do people, groups and various communities of practice organize around social justice issues across scales? What do they accomplish and how can we best capture and assess their accomplishments? How can we apply lessons gained from these experiences in our own organizing efforts locally, internationally and beyond? This course examines the values, principles, strategies, and tactics of local/community and global/ transnational organizing around social justice concerns from combined anti-colonial, anti-oppression anti-racist, anti-authoritarian, anti-fascist, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, feminist, ecological, critical disability, human rights and postdevelopment perspectives, including assessments of their processes, outcomes and contributions across geographic scales. Building on critical thinking skills and knowledge bases gained from 100 and 200 level courses, this course uses readings, case studies and problem-based learning exercises to sharpen learners’ community and international organizing skills and competencies to prepare them for their practicums, internships, volunteer work and make then good change agents for a better world. |

It was self–directed and everything we learned can be applied to everyday lives and our practices – a major difference from the variety of GRSJ courses where a lot of it is very theory based. This class had a great balance and was encouraging to pursue interdisciplinary means. This class repaired my relationship with art and inspired me in ways I could never imagined. I would take this course again in a heartbeat.” |

| 101 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | M, W | 15:00 - 16:30 | Locher-lo, Caroline | Public NotesThis course will explore theories of gender, race, class, and health, focusing on how these notions have been constructed and upheld. Students will utilise sociological approaches and theoretical footings to delve into gender, race, class, and health inequality in Canada. The field of intersectionality will be called upon to assist students in a critical analysis of concepts such as social categorization, subordination, dominance, and power. We will examine a broad range of social practices and norms surrounding healthcare, reproduction, pandemics, domesticity, and the public sphere, and break down the multi-layered inequality experienced by those of different genders, ethnicities, sexualities, identities, etc. We will focus on health inequality and the socio-cultural, historical, structural, and economic circumstances within which they are created, sustained, and normalised. The lecture component aims to illuminate the critical necessity to recognize, comprehend, and respond to social inequality in social space, as many in the contemporary era continue to experience gender-based, racialized, and socioeconomic discrimination in the context of health, healthcare access, and healthcare equality. |

In our first classes we will explore how women of colour feminisms have been an important intellectual genealogy for these fields. We will also consider how Indigenous thinkers complicate queer and trans of color theorizing by applying a decolonizing lens to race, gender, and sexuality. We will then cover three major themes in this class. First, we will consider how racial, gender, and sexual norms have been produced and deployed to target queer and trans of colour lives for state violence, regulation, and policing. Second, we will explore how diaspora and migration have shaped queer and trans of color lives. Third, we will explore how performance has been a critical resource for queer and trans of colour world-making that has opened up opportunities for creative self-fashioning, alternative kinship formation, alliances and coalitions, and decolonial relationships. |

| 101 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | T, Th | 11:00 - 12:30 | Sia, Rosanne | Public NotesThis course will serve as an introduction to anti-colonial and feminist qualitative methodologies with a focus on the historical research methods of oral history and archival research. We will first explore the relationship between colonial power and knowledge, including the concepts of epistemic extractivism and feminist critiques of claims to objectivity, neutrality, and universal truth. Next, we will explore anti-colonial, anti-racist, feminist, and queer methodological approaches to oral history and archival research. Themes to be explored in oral history include embodied memory, shared authority, co-creation of historical knowledge, feminist listening practices, navigating insider and outsider dynamics, and culturally specific storytelling practices such as Filipinx kuwento, Indigenous feminist “yarning,” and Latinx testimonio, plática, and chisme. Themes in archival research include reading with the grain, decolonial sensibilities, critical fabulation, archives of feeling, and emotive archive creation. We will then practice reading across oral history and archival research, discussing the limits and possibilities of these two methodological approaches as we consider how to conduct interdisciplinary research.

| A_101 | 1 | In-Person | Lecture | M, W | 12:30 - 14:00 | Snowden, Kim | Public NotesFandoms, Fan Cultures, and Social Justice This course explores various fandoms in the context of fan studies and social justice as spaces for negotiating identity, escapism, a means of collaboration and community, and as a form of activism. We will look at aspects of fandoms such as fan fiction and storytelling, shipping, politics in fandoms, cosplay, anti-fandoms and what Henry Jenkins calls “cultural convergence” - a form of participatory culture that speaks to the convergence of a group of fans, particularly around technology, new media, and social media. Particular attention will be give to the perceived social contract between fans and artists, creators, actors, etc. who frequently engage with fans. Students will analyze and engage with social justice and fan studies scholarship and various fandoms to understand how fandoms and fan cultures can, at times, be unsafe spaces that reproduce oppressive and harmful ideologies but can also be a place of liberation, collaboration and change for historically marginalized communities. Fandoms explored will come from the worlds of television, film, music, video games, literature, celebrity culture, social media and other areas of popular culture. | B_201 | 2 | In-Person | Lecture | M, W | 14:00 - 15:30 | Machado, Isabel | Public NotesJoy seems to be everywhere these days, from activist affirmations to neoliberal co-optations. Defined by Kristie Soares as “both a scholarly field and an activist movement dedicated to examining how joy functions as a form of political resistance among minoritized communities,” Critical Joy Studies is still an emerging field. Looking at the works of Imani Perry, Lindsay Stewart, adrienne maree brown, Frances Negrón-Muntaner, Miguel Valerio, among others, we think about how joy can fuel social movements and activate defiance and resistance while recognizing when joy can be understood as assimilation and accommodation, and be imposed as a tool to curtail and erase dissent. We also discuss how and when oppressed peoples need to ‘killjoy’ as a practice of resistance. This course combines content learning and practice: students not only learn about theories and concepts related to the critical study joy, but they also produce a collective photo essay exhibition based on the topics covered. This course is restricted to students in 3rd and 4th year. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, email grsj.programsassistant@ubc.ca. | 201 | 2 | In-Person | Lecture | M | 14:00 - 17:00 | Snowden, Kim | Public NotesThe focus for this course: Monstrous Bodies/Monstrous Texts This course will address the ways that the body is rendered monstrous through various discourses such as misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, racism, ageism, and ableism. We will focus on representations of monstrous bodies in literature, film, and popular culture alongside feminist, anti-racist, and social justice theories of monstrosity. Topics include: how reproduction and reproductive politics are represented in fiction and film, how popular culture represents and reproduces monstrous bodies, and the posthuman monster and its reproduction through technology, media, and popular culture. We will read, watch, and analyze a variety of fiction and film including novels, short stories, speculative fiction, science fiction, and horror.
By examining the monstrous ways bodies are represented we will explore how a feminist, anti-racist, intersectional framework can help us think to critically about representations of monstrous bodies and what monsters might teach us about social justice.

| A_201 | 2 | In-Person | Seminar | M | 09:00 - 12:00 | Mayer, Tara | Public NotesA capstone course for our majors, GRSJ 480 is where theory meets action. We take learning beyond the classroom and into communities working to create meaningful social change. Through sustained engagement with community organizations, students apply feminist, anti-racist, decolonial, queer, trans, disability justice, and intersectional frameworks to real-world challenges. The course bridges critical theory and lived experience, encouraging students to reflect on power, privilege, accountability, and the possibilities and challenges of collective action. Working alongside trusted community partners, students gain practical skills in collaboration, communication, advocacy, and community-based research while contributing directly to projects that address pressing local issues. Reflection and dialogue are central to the course, helping students connect their knowledge and skills with ethical community engagement and social responsibility. GRSJ 480 offers an unparalleled opportunity to deepen your understanding of social justice work while building professional relationships, experience, and tools for transformative change. This course is restricted to GRSJ majors in 4th year. | A_101 | 1 | In-Person | Seminar | W | 12:00 - 15:00 | Patterson, Christopher | Public NotesGRSJ_V 500A-101 is the first of a two-term seminar course organized in conjunction with the Noted Speaker Lecture Series hosted by the Institute. Students will develop professional skills for critical scholarship and social justice praxis by learning from a colloquium of voices (the instructor, the speakers, GRSJ faculty, and each other). The seminar will be a vibrant space for exchange and will foster critical and creative dialogues on current questions, theoretical and methodological approaches, and interventions around social justice. The course’s focus on dialogue and critical/creative responses will aim to interrogate questions of ethics, power, and political practice, and to provide critical foundations for examining how to approach knowledge production in academic contexts. Students must complete GRSJ_V 500A-101 before enrolling in GRSJ_V 500B-201. Registration in GRSJ_V 500B-201 will not be permitted without successful completion of the prerequisite. Enrolment in GRSJ-V 500A will prioritize GRSJ graduate students, with up to 5 spots available to non-GRSJ graduate students. Non-GRSJ graduate students who are interested in enrolling should send your request to grsj.programsassistant@ubc.ca and include the course number, section, and your student number. The class will be held in Buchanan Tower 1099. |

| 201 | 2 | In-Person | Seminar | T | 14:00 - 17:00 | Pierre, Jemima | Public NotesThis seminar is centrally concerned with the ethics and politics of knowledge production in a world structured through gendered white supremacist, imperialist, and capitalist power. How do we trace the intimacies of the relationships among places, peoples, ecologies, and economies of the modern world? How do we engage in historical recognition and bear witness to this history of violence and dispossession – but also of transformative forms of resistance? How do we reconcile the colonial production of economies, states, and cultures with the ongoing “postcolonial” othering and dispossession of people? What are ethical modes of intellectual inquiry? As a course on methods, our objectives are: 1) to explore the ways that methods are informed by epistemologies which are, in turn, shaped by history, politics, and ethics; 2) to understand how radical scholars have come to devise their research questions and modes of analysis, and why these are important not only for humanistic and scientific inquiry, but also for liberation. This course is restricted to GRSJ MA and PhD students, however there are 5 available seats for non-GRSJ students. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please send your request to grsj.programsassistant@ubc.ca and include the course number, section, and your student number. | 101 | 1 | In-Person | Seminar | T | 13:00 - 16:00 | Puar, Jasbir | Public NotesThis seminar offers an intensive engagement with foundational and emerging critical theories that shape contemporary understandings of social justice. Drawing from fields such as critical race theory, feminist, queer and trans theory, decolonial, anticolonial, and Indigenous studies, Marxism, disability and debility studies, and bio-necropolitical theory, the course interrogates how power operates across axes of difference and domination. Rather than treating “justice” as a fixed or universal ideal, we approach it as a contested, situated, and evolving concept shaped by historical struggle, epistemic violence, and embodied experience. Students will examine how critical theory functions a method for diagnosing structural inequality, imagining alternative futures, and cultivating collective resistance. Throughout, the seminar emphasizes the ethical and political stakes of critique, the material conditions of theorical knowledge production, and the imperative to ground theory in lived realities and activist praxis. This course is designed for students pursuing interdisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences and is particularly relevant for those committed to anti-colonial frameworks in their academic and political work. This course is open to all Graduate Students, however we will prioritize GRSJ students first. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please send your request to grsj.programsassistant@ubc.ca and include the course number, section, and your student number. Once our GRSJ students register, we will begin to move students from the waitlist to the course in order of waitlisted registration. | D_201 | 2 | In-Person | Seminar | M | 14:00 - 17:00 | Sia, Rosanne | Public NotesSounds of Race and Empire What role does sound play in the making and unmaking of race and empire? Sound has been used to discipline and control racialized communities, marking certain bodies as “unruly,” “dangerous,” or “noisy,” and as a tool in imperial systems of communication, surveillance, and warfare over colonial and occupied territories. Yet, sound has also been a source of joy, solidarity, and world-making for marginalized communities. It can foster diasporic connections, subcultural communities, defiant claims to place, resistant acts of self-making, and alternative relationships with the non-human world. This special topics course explores the role of sound in building colonial infrastructures and in resisting oppressive imaginaries, while also offering students the opportunity to create and workshop their own creative sound-based projects. This course is restricted to GRSJ MA and PhD students, however there are available seats for non-GRSJ students. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please send your request to grsj.programsassistant@ubc.ca and include the course number, section, and your student number.
