About Joy as Resistance

The cover art for this issue (featured at the top of this page) is by the artist bracho and is shared with permission. Dr. Machado introduces the volume with an editorial called “Joy and/in Resistance”.

“As we often discussed throughout this journey, it feels hard to think about joy as we experience the rapid rise of authoritarianism and witness live streamed genocide and the reversal of hard-earned rights in different parts of the globe. I would argue, however, that this is exactly when and why we need to talk about it.”
Co-editor, The Journal of Festive Studies

Dr. Machado will be teaching a special topics course starting in January 2026 about this theme.
